Fonctionnement - Solar model

  • On the diagram, locate the blue curve corresponding to the date which the closest to the current date.

Locate the green dotted line corresponding to the time you want to predict the sun level and shadow.

    • If the point formed by these two lines is on a gray area (mask), the man in the center will be in the shade.
    • If the point is out of the masks, the man in the center will be in the sun.

  • To work, the model must be oriented correctly using a compass. It must also be perfectly horizontal (bubble level).

All that remains is to wait and check if the building and the tree are shading the man at the time the diagram predicted it.

The diagram only works if the building and the tree are placed in the right place on the model. If we move them, we should redraw the 'masks' on the diagram. Between the end of October and the end of March, use the winter hours indicated in brackets. The diagram is less accurate in winter ( about 15 minutes offset).

  • To complete the DIY, it is possible to build a heliodon.

This 3D model makes it possible to visualize the course of the sun according to the seasons and understand that the sun does not rise in the same place and its displacement varies according to the times of the year.

The construction diagram can be downloaded from the chablon/plan section.
